CALI Updates Coronavirus (COVID-19)

March 19, 2020

Dear CALI Families,

First of all, we hope that you and all of your families are doing well and in good health. Please pay close attention to all governmental advisories and guidance (CDC, County and State officials) and do not take this virus lightly. We owe that to ourselves as much as we do to our community.

We were just informed that GEVA has decided to suspend the remainder of the season indefinitely, cancelling all further tournaments and freezing all rankings. At this point, we think that it is still a little early for such a drastic measure since USA volleyball has only cancelled or postponed events up until April. A lot of our tournaments are hosted through other clubs and professional organizations and we are awaiting further updates from them. We are also monitoring the decision from the Northeast Qualifier (NEQ) tournament which, at this time, has been postponed under the USA volleyball guidance.  We are currently discussing alternative ideas and approaches for ways to finish our volleyball season in the best way possible for all our players and families.

If our season does have to come to an end, we will be discussing the financial implication as we determine and identify costs that we may be able to get reimbursed for. Again, thank you for your understanding and patience during this very difficult time. We know that you may have a lot of questions and we apologize for not having many answers yet. We will continue to keep you as informed as we possibly can.

Thank you. We miss seeing you guys in our gym!

- CALI CANCELLATION UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE -

Dear CALI Families,

As you know we have been closely monitoring the news about Coronavirus (COVID-19) since it was first reported. Due to the university's guidance and the information concerning the current status of the COVID-19 Coronavirus, we have decided to SUSPEND all activities until further notice. We will send another update on March 22nd (per recommended by USA Volleyball).

Suspended activities include but is not limited to:

- Team Practices
- Lessons
- Hosted Tournaments
- Attending Tournaments

There will be NO access to the Hofstra Facilities.

As we are all very sad to make this decision, we feel this is the best and safest decision for our players and our community.  We have chosen to do everything we can to ensure the safety of our athletes, coaches and families. We will continue to monitor the situation daily and will provide periodic updates as we follow all local, state and national health organizations recommendations.  We also want to inform you that the Department of Health has informed the University that the test for the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has come back as negative for the Hofstra student (not an student athlete) who had been in isolation since Sunday, March 8.

We appreciate your support and understanding, and we understand that this will bring a lot of questions.  We will provide more information once we learn, as this situation is changing day by day.  At this time, I don’t have many answers as we don’t know about future tournaments and activities.  Thank you for being part of CALI - please stay healthy and be safe!

Emily and the CALI team

Dear Parents and Players,

We have been closely monitoring the news about Coronavirus (COVID-19) since it was first reported. With the increasing number of cases of the Coronavirus being reported across the world, the country, the region and now in our state. The Physical Education Building gym at Hofstra University and CALI are taking extra measures in protecting our athletes and our staff.

Our main priority is the safety, health and well-being of our members, attendees and guests. We will continue to update you as the situation requires. We are keeping up to date with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the State of New York and the Nassau County Health Department.

As we are being told by numerous sources, everyday prevention should be taken including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick as well as practice ‘social distancing’

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth

  • Avoid physical salutations such as handshakes, hugs, fist bumps, etc.

  • Avoid sharing food or beverages

  • Stay home when you or your child(ren) are sick and contact your health care provider

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (after using the bathroom, before eating, after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing, etc.)

  •  If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

Hofstra increased the ‘hand sanitizer’ locations throughout the facility. We encourage you to carry personal hand sanitizer if we run out. The university is frequently disinfecting often-touched surfaces throughout the facility such as door handles, water fountains, restroom surfaces, concession stands, etc.

We are asking anyone who has developed symptoms or has come into contact with infected individuals to stay home and follow the CDC’s instructions.

We will continue to monitor the situation and follow guidance from local and national authorities on appropriate next steps that need to be implemented.  We are continuing with our practices, but it is your discretion to attend practice or not.  If you do not feel comfortable please stay home and it will not count against your daughter.  If you want your daughter to attend practice, we are not allowing anyone else to stay and watch starting by tomorrow.  Please drop your daughter off and pick her up after practice.

Regarding the tournaments GEVA just released a statement that all tournaments are cancelled until the end of March.  We just learned about this decision at the same time you did so we will give you more updates as we learn them.  We are asking for your support and collaboration throughout this difficult time.  Again, we are here for practice but will update you in any change.

Thank you!

Emily Mansur (club director) and the CALI Team.
